Blizzard is your best AOE by far and with talents it slow the enemy in game
A mage is not just a single target DPSer though. They are some of the best Cronous Gold AOE PVPers in the game.
If there is a large group of enemies, of they are forced to go through a choke point switch from single target DPS to AOE spells. Blizzard is your best AOE by far. It deals good damage, but with talents it will slow the enemy and sometimes freeze them in place. It has a very wide range so try to use it when enemies are forced through a small area like a bridge, valley or tunnel.
Flame-strike is almost as good as blizzard because you can cast it and forget it while the DOT portion does all the work. It is best used on stationary goals like flags or resource nodes.
Arcane explosion and blast wave are two other good AOEs, but they require you to be right in the middle of your enemies. Save them for when your base is overrun and you will probably die anyway. This way you can take some of them down with you!
While a mage may be great at DPSing in PVP, they also bring some of the best crowd control in the game. With polymorph you can effectively take a player out of the game for ten seconds.
