You have a good spread of buffs to give yourself, which definitely help in combat. You have the choice of using a herald as a meat shield, and as long as you do not doze off, your various heal and shield (LOTRO Gold)-brother skills should keep him alive. And he/she comes with his/her own buffs and a few minor powers (which include a meek, but still useful, healing ability. Just enough to let you slide through a back pull if used well) your self-healing is limited, but still viable. It requires killing a mob to open up the window to use it.
And as you get higher in level, you get a rather nice defeat-delaying skill that lets you go on a few extra seconds after you would normally have been defeated. If you are being swarmed it is not much use, but it is a life-saver (pun intended) if you just need a few more moments to kill that mob/boss. Once the power time is up, you're back to vulnerability though (and with limited moral). So again, it is key that you defeat whatever you were facing.
Aside from that, the usual classes mentioned like the Warden work really well. The key is really that you find the class that fits you best. The Warden may be the best solo-class, but if you do not enjoy playing it, or if you do not really know how to, then that bad karma will translate into the game, and you will not succeed with it. If you find a class you love to play, and love enough to learn how to play well, then you'll be nigh unbeatable.
