He started off his career in RedWar as a Mage, one the games three classes, but he quickly regretted that decision after learning that the only way to learn new skills in the game is through skill books. He had a gut feeling that he would like to end up using his level 1 spell for a lot longer than he should because he seem to have bad luck finding the skill books that he need in games like this.
We really would not have any complaints with the games skill system if the game placed some sort of NPC in town that sold all of the newbie skills, perhaps all of the level 15 and below skills, but that is not the case here. Players have to either grind for countless to find the skill books they need.
He was actually using his level 1 skill 'fireball' skill up until level 15, as he could not find any of the skill books we needed. We finally found a level 5 skill when he reached level 15 or so, but at that point we should have been using level 10 or 15 skills. One good thing we would like to mention about Red War though is that every character starts out with a set of newbie armor (red war gold) and 1000 newbie HP/MP potions.
1000 of each potion may sound like overkill, but these low level potions quickly become obsolete after a few hours of game play as they restore very little hit points after level 5. Starting off with this equipment though makes the early levels of Red War less intimidating than the rest of the game.
